Shawn McGuirk

NSERC
Senior Policy Advisor
Ottawa
Shawn McGuirk is a Senior Policy Advisor (formerly Canadian Science Policy Fellow) at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), an alumnus of the Government of Canada Recruitment of Policy Leaders program, and a PhD and Vanier Scholar at the Goodman Cancer Research Centre at McGill University. His research centers on the role of cellular metabolism in cancer progression. During this degree he completed numerous international collaborations and high-impact peer-reviewed publications, and he launched a biomedical startup (ProVivoX) which won top prizes in competitions at the US Center for Advancing Innovation Breast Cancer Startup Challenge and at Fondation Montréal. He represents his fellow students on the board of directors of Acfas, as well as with the student-led non-profit organization Science & Policy Exchange, whose mandate is to elevate the student voice in science policy and through which students may gain unique experience in policy and public outreach.

As president of Science & Policy Exchange from 2016-2018, Shawn and his team highlighted Canadian research and policy developments through expert panels and public forums, represented the student voice in provincial and federal policy discussions, and mobilized the scientific trainee community for the 2018 Canadian federal budget, which contributed to a historic increase in support for fundamental research funding and early career researchers. This work included partnerships with the Fonds de Recherche du Quebec (FRQ), the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), the American Association for Advancement of Science, and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, among many others.
